How are the alveoli designed to maximise the exchange of gases?

Alveoli are tiny air sacs in the lungs. They have thin walls and are surrounded by many blood vessels, which create a large surface area for gases to pass through easily. This design helps oxygen move from the alveoli into the blood and carbon dioxide move from the blood into the alveoli to be exhaled.
